Sankt Gilgen is a village by the Wolfgangsee in the Austrian state of Salzburg, in the "Salzkammergut" region. Strobl (or Strobl am Wolfgangsee) is a municipality of the Salzburg-Umgebung District (Flachgau), in the northeastern portion of the Austrian state of Salzburg, right on the border with Upper Austria. It comprises the Katastralgemeinden of Aigen, Gschwendt, Strobl, and Weißenbach It lies on the eastern side of lake Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut resort region, close to Sankt Gilgen and the Upper Austrian municipalities of St. Wolfgang and Bad Ischl. St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut is an Austrian town east of Salzburg, in the The Pilgrimage Church, overlooking Lake Wolfgangsee, houses a towering, intricately carved winged altarpiece. Ferries, including an 1873 paddle steamer, cruise the lake, which is ringed by mountains. The Schafbergbahn, a steam-powered cog railway, climbs to Schafberg’s summit for panoramic views of the Dachstein range. A destination spa, St. Wolfgang is also a popular skiing resort during the winter. A rack railway, the Schafbergbahn runs up the mountain. The town owes it's name to holy Wolfgang who was looking for refuge in the area more than 1000 years ago.
